Are there really Angels, Satan, and Demons?
This sermon is on Satan, Angels, and Demons. It describes the devil, the station of the angels,
the fall of the devil and his angels from Heaven.
Satan
Some experts believe that Satan (Lucifer) was a Cherubim angel while others believe him to be an Archangel). I will refer to him as an Archangel in this sermon, knowing that regardless of which level of angel he was, he had been given great authority in Heaven.
The archangel that we refer to as Satan was originally called Lucifer. His name as described in the Old Testament book of Isaiah was Morning Star. Lucifer (or Morning Star) was God’s favorite angel and he gave him the power of free will. He was very handsome / pleasant to look at and shined (henceforth the name Morning Star). Isaiah 14, verses 12 -19 describes how Lucifer fell from heavenn when he willed to be God. Ezekiel 28:12 also describes his glory and fall.
Demons
Demons are some of the most destructive and violent angels that fell with Lucifer as he was cast out of Heaven. Some were so violent that God had to lock them in Hell pending the final judgment to prevent destruction of the universe. They have extreme hatred towards God and towards humans. They cause harmful and bad things to happen to people on Earth. In the book of Job, it is mentioned that Lucifer and his angels had tried to get to Job but could not because God had built a barrier around Job and his family. It was after God removed that protection was Lucifer able to affect Job.
War in Heaven (Fall of Lucifer – Satan)
Lucifer and his followers (angels) revolted against God. There was a great war in heaven. Lucifer and his angels were cast out of heaven. Some of the angels were bound and locked up in Hell. Others accompanied Lucifer to his dominion and now roam the Earth causing pain and suffering to humans. The following is from the Amplified Bible:
“Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels went forth to
battle with the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought.
But they were defeated, and there was no
room found
for them in heaven any longer.
And the huge dragon was cast down and out; that age-old serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, he who is the seducer (deceiver) of all humanity
the world over; he was forced out and came down to the earth,
and his angels were flung out along with him”
Revelation 12:7-9 KJV
Angels
There five most well-known types of angels in lowest to highest order are: Angels, Archangels, Ophanim, Cherubim’s, and Seraphims.
Angles are the lowest form and they carry out the work of God.
Archangels are in command of legions of angels. There are three archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Lucifer. Lucifer was in command of the warrior angels. When Lucifer and his followers (angles) fell from heaven, many of the angels had to be bound by God to prevent them from destroying the universe. Archangels are mentioned in the book of Daniel and in I Thessalonians 4:16 and Jude 1:9.
Wheels (Ophanim) are described as being wheel shaped and having eyes in their rims. Ezekiel described them as, "When they moved, the others moved; when they stopped, the others stopped; and when they rose from the earth, the wheels rose along with them; for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels." (see below)
Cherubim are near the throne of God. They have four faces: one of a man, ox, lion, and eagle. They have eight wings; they are full of eyes, and have the feet of an ox. Cherubim are considered the elect beings for the purpose of protection and they guard the throne of God. (see below - Also see Revelation 4: 6-8).
Seraphims are the highest order of angels that were created. They stand near the throne of God. Isaiah 6:1–3 describes the Seraphim: "I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne … Above Him stood the Seraphim; each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. They are recorded as constantly saying '"Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.”
Then I looked, and, behold, in the firmament that was above
the head of the cherubims
there appeared over them as it were a sapphire stone, as the appearance of the
likeness of a throne.
And he spake unto the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels, even under the cherub, and fill thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims, and scatter them over the city. And he went in, in my sight. Now the cherubims stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in; and the cloud filled the inner court.
Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub, and stood over the threshold of the house; and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was full of the brightness of the LORD'S glory. And the sound of the cherubims' wings was heard even to the outer court, as the voice of the Almighty God when he speaketh. And it came to pass, that when he had commanded the man clothed with linen, saying, Take fire from between the wheels, from between the cherubims; then he went in, and stood beside the wheels. And one cherub stretched forth his hand from between the cherubims unto the fire that was between the cherubims, and took thereof, and put it into the hands of him that was clothed with linen: who took it, and went out.
And there appeared in the cherubims the form of a man's hand under their wings.
And when I looked , behold the four wheels by the cherubims, one wheel by one cherub, and another wheel by another cherub: and the appearance of the wheels was as the colour of a beryl stone. And as for their appearances, they four had one likeness, as if a wheel had been in the midst of a wheel. When they went , they went upon their four sides; they turned not as they went , but to the place whither the head looked they followed it; they turned not as they went. And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, were full of eyes round about, even the wheels that they four had.
As for the wheels, it was cried unto them in my hearing, O wheel. And every one had four faces: the first face was the face of a cherub, and the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle. And the cherubims were lifted up. This is the living creature that I saw by the river of Chebar. And when the cherubims went, the wheels went by them: and when the cherubims lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the same wheels also turned not from beside them. When they stood, these stood; and when they were lifted up, these lifted up themselves also: for the spirit of the living creature was in them.
Then the glory of the LORD departed from off the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubims. And the cherubims lifted up their wings, and mounted up from the earth in my sight: when they went out, the wheels also were beside them, and every one stood at the door of the east gate of the LORD'S house; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.
This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of Chebar; and I knew that they were the cherubims. Every one had four faces apiece, and every one four wings; and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings. And the likeness of their faces was the same faces which I saw by the river of Chebar, their appearances and themselves: they went every one straight forward.
