Tony A. of Arlington Tx asks: I constantly struggle with trying to be the best Christian I can be but find that at times it’s very hard. I want to witness to my friends but find it difficult to bring up the topic of God and salvation.
Pastor Jay’s response: Hi Tony. Thank you for the question! First, as Christians were are at “liberty” in Christ. Being a Christian does not mean we do not do things that are wrong, it means that we are God’s children regardless of what we do. Our lives are hid in Christ and when God looks at us He sees the perfection of Christ, not our sinful nature. Therefore, when you do not accomplish your desired behavior as a Christian just remember you are not expected to be flawless. Paul wrote in Romans 7:24 “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from this body of death?” Paul constantly struggled with the flesh and sin. Then he says in Chapter 8, verse 10, “And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” Paul wanted Christians to understand that despite their sins, their lives were hid in Christ’s righteousness.
Concerning your question about how to bring up the topic of God and salvation, it is often easier if you tie it in with the current conversation. Perhaps you are discussing a problem someone is having. Propose God has the solution. If the conversation does not lead in the direction that makes it easy to discuss God, perhaps you can tell them about a new website you found on the internet (TGCM.org) that talks about yr 2012, UFO’s, etc. That may give you an opening. Otherwise, perhaps you can bring them to the site and use it to witness to them.
Brenda W. of Little Rock, Ark asks: I do not go to church very often. Will I still go to heaven?
Pastor Jay’s response: Thank you Brenda for your question. YES! You will still go to heaven. Eternal life in Jesus is a FREE gift. It is not earned by what we do nor is lost by what we do not do. Going to church is great because it allows you to learn more about your faith and fellowship with other Christians. It is not required to go to heaven.
James S. of Albany, NY asks: Is the Old Testament still relevant to us today?
Pastor Jay’s response: Thanks James. The Old Testament describes the covenant that God had made with His chosen people Israel. The books of the Old Testament are very useful in understanding God’s love for us, how God has dealt with mankind in the past, the lessons that were learned and the examples of faith and trust in God by great men and women in the past, the inspiration of the Psalms, the wisdom of Proverbs, and the prophecies that mirror the book of Revelations.
But for doctrine and the way to heaven, the New Testament describes the Dispensation of the Church and the Doctrine of Grace that were revealed to Peter and Paul. The three books every Christian should read are: Romans, Ephesians, and 1 John.
