Santa Claus

Where Did He Come From?

This is a short to the point description of who Santa is and his origin. The original Santa Claus was St. Nicholas, a Catholic priest who was born in the third century . He would deliver gifts to needy children. Some stories say that he would dress up in a costume to disguise himself.  It is also common to hear that other priests and adults would later imitate this action to give toys to the children on Christmas. It became a popular saying that St. Nick is coming.

The image of the Santa Claus we have today would begin to appear in the 1920’s. However, as late as the mid-1960’s the term “St. Nick” was still being used in a lot of commercials and Christmas items. However that has since changed. To totally remove religion from the Christmas celebration marketers began focusing their ads on the imaginary character Santa Claus. Cartoons sprung depicting this character and of course the famous reindeer and his home in the North Pole.

So here we are today. Santa is going to bring our children toys? That’s what many seem to tell them or let them believe.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
